2018 is shaping up to be one of the most socially conscious years we've ever seen in recent decades. Our society has become more aware of social issues, holding people, companies and leaders accountable for the services, products and direction they provide. The fashion industry is no exception. We've seen a rising trend in companies that are making more of an effort to focus their attention on how their product is made, where the fabric is sourced, and the conditions in which they are made. This rise in focus has created a movement in the fashion industry that can't be ignored.

Here are a few companies that have become leaders in the world of Eco-fashion:

1. Everlane

Everlane is a prime example of what eco-fashion can be. Based out of San Francisco, California, Everlane is setting a benchmark for the way brands should be presenting themselves.

At Everlane, we want the right choice to be as easy as putting on a great T-shirt. That’s why we partner with the best, ethical factories around the world. Source only the finest materials. And share those stories with you—down to the true cost of every product we make. It’s a new way of doing things. We call it Radical Transparency.

In a break from the norm, Everlane focuses less on seasonal trends, and more on quality, ethically made products that they say will last you for years. They also come in at a reasonable price point for the products they make with the fabrics they use. To top it off, they try and be as transparent as possible with the costs involved in the making of the product, from start to finish. You can see this cost breakdown on their about page linked here

We applaud the efforts of Everlane and hope that more companies can work towards what they're trying to achieve.

2. PACT Apparel

PACT apparel is all about comfy. The company focuses on finding the most sustainable fabrics and only works with fair trade certified factories all around the world. By doing this, they have more control of where and how the fabrics are made, and they also ensure that no pesticides or dyes are used in the fabric.

They believe that creating clothing should not come at the cost of people, or the environment.

I started Pact with a lofty goal: to create the comfiest clothes in the world without destroying the earth, or harming people. I believe that what we wear, matters. So, I set out to do things better.

I believe there is always room to improve, but I couldn’t be more proud of the clothes we make. By using the best sustainable ingredients, and Fair Trade Certified™ factories, we create clothes that don’t just feel good, you can feel good about wearing them. - Brendan Synnott - Founder

3. Reformation

Founded by Yael Aflalo, the company focuses on transparency in where their fabric is sourced, how the product is made and where all the components of their product comes from.

Investing in green building infrastructure to minimize our waste, water, and energy footprints are a pillar in their message. By providing on-the-job training and opportunities for growth we want to invest in the people who are helping the movement of sustainable, eco-fashion possible.

Most of our hourly workers are paid more than minimum wage, and over half are paid above the LA living wage threshold. We are working towards 100% living wages across the board.

Reformation is another COL favourite in the movement towards more Eco-Conscious brands.

We hope that more and more consumers give eco-conscious brands more consideration as they look towards making their next clothing purchase. Shifting towards more eco-conscious clothing is not only beneficial for our ever-changing environment, but also for the working class people that are making the product, and the future of the industry.

When you get dressed in the morning, you might be too groggy to remember what the production tags on your outfit say, but it is something you should pay attention to before you hit the check out. In a world where nearly everything is globalized, it is easy to lose sense of the origins of the items we consume.
